History: Juneau, Alaska has a fascinating gold rush fever history that started nearly 130 years ago when gold was discovered by a Tlingit indian named Kowee of the Auk Tlingit Tribe who reported his discovery to a Sitka, Alaska engineer named George Pilz, who had offered an attractive reward (100 pair of Hundson Bay blankets and work for the tribe).

Prior to the invasion of white prospectors, the area was relatively untouched and served the local Tlingit Indian tribes as rich salmon grounds.

The town has undergone name changes over the years depending on who was the dominate political or military person at the time. In 1880 the town was known as Harrisburg after one of the first prospectors Richard Harris who acted as the town recorder, later when the mining camp came under the command of Lt. Commander Charles Rockwell the name was changed to Rockwell (February 1881). By the end of 1881, Joe Juneau a successful prospector, lobbied enough support from the miners to have the town named for him - Juneau.

Juneau is built at the heart of the Inside Passage along the Gastineau Channel and today is Alaska's thriving capital city.
